It has been unfortunate that school exchanges have been suspended because of issues in the border region. However, we are optimistic that some exchanges will begin with Sonoran schools travelling to Arizona to visit their partner schools in FY 2011-2012. During these one-way exchanges, we will encourage the coordinators to develop an exchange agenda that will accomplish two requirements of the program, 1) Arizona and Sonoran teachers (coordinators) will develop an academic project to meet one academic standard, and 2) Sonora school will provide a cultural experience for the host school (Arizona) and the host school will provide a cultural experience for the visiting school.
The foundation will be discussing with member schools how technology can be used to continue communication between schools and students, and to provide a lens whereby the students and teachers can learn from one another.
Lastly, in the fall of 2011 when school begins we are hoping to have a teacher exchange pilot project begin. Presently, the Oracle School District, Mountain Vista School, has agreed to partner with a school in Cananea to conduct the first exchange.
The idea is for the teachers to stay in a host home and shadow each other during the exchange which will be two to 3 weeks. More details will be provided as the program formalizes.
